UN Day 2020 at AUS
AUSMUN’s Director of Logistics Mohammad Alzaabi officially welcomed the AUS community to the AUSMUN’s grand celebration of UN Day. The theme of the event was Shaping Peace Together, and it provided a means for the appreciation of the United Nations’ 75 years of service in this field. Alzaabi provided a comprehensive but concise introduction of the role of the UN and its history. The event was graced with the presence of two esteemed speakers: AUS Faculty Advisor Dr. Sammy Badran and the 2019 UAE Youth Delegate to the UN, Ms. Maryam Belhoul.
Drawing on his expertise in the field of International Studies, Dr. Badran gave an informative presentation on the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Some of the various things discussed include the role of UNICEF in providing humanitarian aid for children in need, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on achieving this, and the importance of advocating for the mental health of children. Dr. Badran noted that the UN emphasizes the importance of mental health as well as physical health, and this has been apparent in its response to the recent Beirut Blast.
Following Dr. Badran’s enlightening talk, Ms. Maryam Belhoul followed to give a profound speech regarding her personal, hands-on experience in working with the UN. As a youth delegate, she had the opportunity to be a part of the third committee, participate in informal negotiations and draft policies. She discussed how meeting world leaders and experts in the General Assembly hall of the UN had been a turning point in her career and changed her views about international priorities. As an AUS alumni and a young leader, she advised the current students to grasp every opportunity, attend talks, organize activities and participate in various events organized by the UN. “Although your schedule might seem packed, university years are irreplaceable. You have time to truly find your passion”, she added.
After an interactive Q and A session with the speakers, a Kahoot quiz was conducted to test the audience’s knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals, with exciting prizes for the winner. The AUS community also wrote out their pledges to contribute to a peaceful world. The event concluded with these fun games, leaving everyone in a state of anticipation for future events and the MUN conference.
