AUSMUN features its first Arabic speaking panel

UNIVERSITY CITY — The American University of Sharjah’s 2019 Model United Nations Conference, which took place Feb. 21-23 featured its first UNESCO Arabic speaking panel.

The committee was established with the input of AUS’s Translation Department regarding the proper terminologies to use during the sessions.

AUS international studies student and UNESCO moderator Eiman Al Shareif said that the delegates exceeded their expectations.

“We didn’t expect them to be so amazing,” she said.

Given that Arabic is one of the UN’s official languages, incorporating the language in the conference provided students with an insight into real-life experiences, she added.

AUS journalism student and UNESCO moderator Layan Abouchkaier said that the sessions were important considering that most students attending private educational institutions speak English fluently; however, they do not use Modern Standard Arabic in their daily lives.

Such a committee assisted them in developing their skills and brought into perspective the real importance of this language, she said.

The difficulty they face while expressing themselves drives them to think about what to concentrate on and study to master the language, she added.
